To Revive Hunting, States Turn to the Classroom

That’s a joke, right? Out of all the problems we face as a society, “young people aren’t picking up guns, stalking prey, and learning how to field dress game” seems to be pretty low on the list.

“For us, guns and hunting was a way of life,” said Mr. Helms, the manager of Marstiller’s Gun Shop here. “A lot of places seem to be losing that, and we need to bring it back.”

Wow, a guy who owns a gun shop supports the state stepping in and promoting the sales of guns?

And that’s not even the focus of the article. Like the headline says, it’s all about finding new ways to bring guns and hunting into the classroom.

Here at DYM, we’ve established a division of labor, in which Pennystripe manages our MySpace while I run the real website. ¹ Nothing is more amusing than the fact that Pennystripe has to field irate or annoyed comments on MySpace thanks to something insensitive or inconsiderate I’ve posted here on the blog.

Ayn Rand would probably not be too keen on Weight of Atlas, if for no other reason than the fact that the band doesn’t beat around the infinite bush of pretentiousness. One thing author and band might have in common, though, is the fact that both would be enjoyed by Reed philosophy students. These dark indie rockers manage to instill foreboding pop songs with a light touch of politics that evokes She Wants Revenge with a decidedly lighter tone, intelligent lyrics, sparse instrumentation and an ear for the bittersweet. Another part of the “fun” is learning to accommodate various personal “quirks.”

Infinite Monkey said he’d be over to record his banjo and dialogue(!) parts “between noon and 1.” Then he called at 12:30 and said, “Hey, I’m running some errands, so I’ll probably be there around 3.”

It’s 3:48 as I type this. Eloise just told me that I was an idiot for expecting him to get here before 4:30.
