HTWAOS, Part III

Writing about writing songs is actually going to be a bit trickier than I’d anticipated, since I’m working on three songs at once. Since the process is a bit different for each of the songs, I’ll be blogging in triplicate throughout, and I’ll mostly leave it up to you, intelligent reader, to recognize the [...]

How to Write an Occasional Song, Part II

Sometimes, when you’re crying your eyes out, hanging onto the railing of a bridge, or even just hanging out in a friend’s apartment holding a gun to your head, you’ll hear someone say, “You can choose your friends, but you can’t choose your family.” Or something like that; you’re probably too distracted by your [...]

How to Write An Occasional Song, Part I

Writing a pop song is pretty much the easiest thing anybody can do. You don’t need any tools or devices–as a matter of fact, let’s write a song right now.
Pick a word. I don’t know you, so I don’t know what you would consider easy… maybe you’re the type who’d rather invent a [...]

Speaking of New

As you well know, you can now purchase Roboctopus via iTunes.
In addition! I’ve just put up a page of sound nuggets from the album. I have no idea who might be interested in this sort of thing, but I’m guessing that if you are the type that might be interested, you’re probably reading [...]

It Is Here

Thanks to the fine folks at TuneCore, Roboctopus is now available from iTunes:

Roboctopus
$9.99 for 17 tracks of music and music-related product!

Fake Poutine

Here’s two things we missed at Logan’s Pub in Victoria:
1. Seeing Immaculate Machine (they play on the 31st).
2. Eating their “authentic” poutine (they didn’t have any fresh cheese curds).
However! We were able to sample some fake poutine, and guess what? It was FANTASTIC.

One Disappointment

Apparently, you can’t find decent poutine in British Columbia. It’s strictly a Quebec thing.
I’m going to have to place a call to Stephen Harper.

Final Approval From Canada

The folks at TuneCore sent me the proofs of the Roboctopus artwork. Final approval has been granted, and shit is GOING INTO PRODUCTION.
And yes, I’m sitting here at Serious Coffee on the corner of Yates and Broad in lovely and temperate Victoria, BC. Eloise is out shopping in some ridiculously cute stores on [...]

Because I know some of you

Don’t check the Harper’s site on a regular basis:
A new one from Mr. Fish.
Alright, me and Eloise are off to Canada. Wish us luck! We’ll bring back some All-Dressed Potato Chips and Turkish Delights for you all.

Our Individual About Pages

Are pretty pathetic. For instance, here’s Monkey’s AWESOME page.
I’ll have some time to work on them next week when I get back from Canada… so why don’t the rest of you jerk-offs come up with content for those bad-boys?

our computer drives me mad

It’s only like 2 years old and is supposed to be all great but it truly sucks. This computer industry needs to come up with a way to upgrade the same equipment so we’re not throwing year-old computers into the landfill once a year. OR, they should at least pay for the consumer to proerly [...]

Fundraiser Wrap-Up II

Ali Wesley also played a set at the fundraiser, and since she has an album that’s listed on iTunes, it gives me a chance to test out this new iTunes linkmajig I signed us up for…
Let me know if it works, huh?
Ali Wesley - All Things (My Two Fish)
Oh, and for the completists out there, [...]

The Gertrude Fundraiser: A Wrap-Up

This may come as news to half of the band, but guess what? Tonight at the Gertrude Fundraiser’s silent auction, we put three songs on the block. And guess even more what? People ACTUALLY BID FOR THEM.
So now we’ve got to write and record the following three songs:
1. A TV Theme Song. [...]

The Socialist Music Model

So one of the crazy things about Roboctopus is the fact that we’ll actually be charging money for it. As in, you don’t get it for free. (Well, everyone who participated in the creation of the album gets one for free, but that’s it.)
Wait, I should back up: one of the craziest things [...]

Time for a new guitar?

So I’m thinking about trading in the Mexicaster and picking up a new guitar. But after a brief look around, it seems like my best option is… a new Mexicaster. Hm. Maybe I should just take my guitar in and tell the dudes at the guitar shop to trick it out. [...]

Any Ol’ Music Will Do

If you’re looking for something to do tonight that’s as free as it is awesome, come watch me as I moonlight with The Jolenes on a small handful of songs that were all released in 1984. Worth the price of admission alone is this song, our cover of which will peel off the first three [...]

August 17, 6-8:30pm

Out of our hands

The album is done. It’s as good as it’s going to get. It should be available on iTunes, iTunes Canada, and iTunes Japan “on or before October 9, 2007.” The super special ultramagnetic self-released limited edition CD should be done in a couple of weeks… maybe before Barnstock, maybe not. My [...]

We got our tickets

Eloise and I bought our tickets for Sunday, September 16.
A couple of days ago, after preparing for the upcoming release of Challengers by listening to their first three albums non-stop, Eloise asked why we didn’t write songs like the New Pornographers. I told her it was because we didn’t want to be rich and [...]

Mix G

This is the thirteenth of a planned eighty-part series on the mixing of Roboctopus.
This is, for real, it. We are so very close. I’m going to run “Angler of Death” by the band for some approving grunts and nods, and we’re done. Then it’s mastering tomorrow night with Jeremy, and VOICI.
I think [...]
